The nuisance.
Every journalist knows the gap between circulation and confirmation. A claim appears, travels across a dozen outlets within hours, and arrives looking verified because it is everywhere. The unglamorous work that catches it, checking a claim at its origin, finding a second independent source, asking what would prove it wrong, is exactly the work that deadline pressure squeezes out first. Nexus Signal was built to test whether that work could survive with no newsroom around it at all.
The origin.
Nexus Signal began as a use case in the 2025 DW Akademie AI Fellowship, delivered in partnership with Africa Uncensored and Odipo Dev, a programme for media pioneers in Kenya focused on integrating AI into journalism responsibly, ethically, transparently and inclusively. Expert facilitators guided each fellow toward something practical: not a concept paper, but a working answer to an everyday newsroom nuisance. This is mine.
What got built.
An independent news analysis channel, publishing steadily each week on Telegram and at nexussignal.org, under a promise five words long: rather right than first. Every story ships in the same four-beat format, The Signal, The Pattern, The Implication, The Question: what happened, the structure behind it, why it matters, and what is worth sitting with. The format is discipline, not packaging. It forces the separation of fact from interpretation in every single story.
Behind it runs an automated production desk. A bot reads a story sheet on a schedule, checks readiness, day and time slot, posts to the channel, and stamps each story so nothing posts twice. Distribution, scheduling and production support are automated. Editorial judgment is not, and never will be.
Where the judgment stays human.
Every editorial gate is held by a person: two independent sources on load-bearing claims, a deliberate search for disconfirming evidence, sources labelled honestly enough to admit when a wire story was read through republications, and stories dropped without publishing when a claim will not confirm, including on their own publishing day. The record so far.
A growing archive of signals and dispatches across politics, economics, health, technology and culture, published steadily since launch, with a standing corrections policy and no silent edits. Stories have been cut, held, and dropped on their own publishing day when verification could not be completed. That record is the point: the invisible work, done consistently, with every witness removed. The archive itself is the always-current count, live at nexussignal.org.
